Meet Our Gynecologists, OBGYNs & Women’s Healthcare Providers
Hutzel Women’s Health Specialists was founded in 2007 by a group of physicians who were active in the academic OB/GYN practice at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University School of Medicine. They saw the need for a vibrant, all-inclusive private practice in the Metro Detroit area and created Hutzel Women’s Health Specialists.
Dr. Cristina Alfieri completed her undergraduate education at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and received her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts in 2002. She subsequently moved with her husband to Detroit and completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University. Dr. Alfieri started her career at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, RI, prior to joining Hutzel Women’s Health Specialists in 2008.
Dr. Alfieri’s clinical interests include care of high-risk pregnancies, management of labor and delivery, and promotion of women’s control of their own fertility.
In addition to caring for her patients, she enjoys traveling with her husband and children and being an active member of her community.
Dr. Cristina Alfieri is a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Lori Billis-Gergics, MD received her undergraduate degree from San Diego State University with a major in Biology. She then returned to her home state of Michigan to attend medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. Graduating in 1996 from medical school, she completed her residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Hutzel Hospital and the Detroit Medical Center.
Dr. Billis-Gergics initially joined a private practice on the East Side after graduating, but later returned to the Detroit Medical Center in 2005 to join the Obstetrics & Gynecology faculty. She spent many years teaching residents and medical students. She now enjoys the balance of private practice at Hutzel Women’s Health Specialists and continuing her resident teaching. Her primary interests include obstetrics, adolescent gynecology, perimenopause/postmenopausal care, and women’s wellness.
Free time is spent with her family and friends. She enjoys boating, swimming, golf, Tiger baseball games, and many other outdoor activities.
Dr. Gergics is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Dr. David Kmak is originally from Northwest Indiana. He completed his undergraduate college training at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He then graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1986. Dr. Kmak performed his resident training in OB/GYN at Hutzel Hospital/Detroit Medical Center. Following residency, he joined the faculty of Wayne State University Department of OB/GYN at Hutzel Hospital and the Detroit Medical Center. Dr. Kmak was part of the faculty for 17 years until he decided to go into private practice as a provider for Hutzel Women’s Health Specialists.
Dr. Kmak’s areas of specialty are minimally invasive and robotic surgeries. He is an accredited provider at the Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery based at Harper/Hutzel Hospital. A surgeon must have demonstrated their skills in surgery, as well as low complication rates to be credentialed for this designation through the AAGL (American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy).
Dr. Kmak has been elected and listed in Hour Detroit magazine as a “Top Doc” for the last five years.
DIANE A. VISTA-DECK
MSN, RN, WHNP-BC
Valerie is a board-certified Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner. She completed both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing at Wayne State University. Valerie has 25 years of experience providing care to women and infants. She has worked in the neonatal, labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum units at Hutzel Hospital as well as various clinics throughout the city of Detroit.
With 17 years of experience as a nurse practitioner, Valerie is qualified to provide comprehensive, low-risk obstetrical and gynecological care, while also presenting patient education and promoting healthy behavior at Hutzel Women’s Health Specialists.
In her free time, Valerie enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, playing tennis, and practicing yoga.
She is an educational affiliate member of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Natalie Woods, a Detroit native, started her nursing career in 2003 at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit. After eight years of service, she transferred to Wayne State University School of Medicine to perform OB research related to HIV in pregnancy, and postpartum medication regimes in the infectious disease department.
Natalie’s passion to provide full-scope care to her obstetrical patients led her to pursue further education in midwifery. In 2015, Natalie obtained a Master of Science in Nursing, with a concentration in Advanced Practice Nursing with Women, Neonates, and Children. She began practicing as a certified nurse midwife in 2016 at Hutzel Women’s Hospital OB triage unit and joined Hutzel Women’s Health Specialists in 2017. She loves being a mother, midwife, and friend. She enjoys life and approaches it with a positive outlook, finding good in any situation. One of her favorite quotes is “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” This explains her relentless passion for continuous personal career growth.
Professional affiliations include the American College of Nurse Midwifery, Sigma Theta Tau, and she is a co-founder of the Metro Detroit Midwives of Color. Natalie is involved in various community programs such a Moms In Motion (HIV support group for women). She is also dedicated to the Midwest HIV Prevention and Pregnancy Planning Initiative project. Natalie provides mentorship for aspiring midwives.
